Running a Conflict Check

Screen new clients and matters for potential conflicts of interest before engagement

Before taking on a new client or matter, law firms need to verify there's no conflict of interest with existing clients. The Conflict Checker searches your client and matter database for potential matches, giving you a documented record of the check.

Running a Check

  1. Go to Conflict Checker in the left sidebar or Tools menu.
  2. Enter the name of the prospective client, opposing party, or related parties. You can run checks on multiple names.
  3. Click Run Check.
  4. Review the results for any matches or partial matches.
  5. Document the results for your records — many firms keep conflict check documentation as part of their new-matter intake file.

Understanding Results

  • Exact Match — A direct match on the name you searched. This requires immediate review by the responsible attorney before the firm can proceed.
  • Partial Match — Similar names or related parties that may indicate a conflict. These need investigation — a partial match could be a coincidence or a genuine conflict.
  • No Match — No conflicts found based on current data in TimeTracker.

Best Practices

  • Run conflict checks before engaging any new client or matter — not after.
  • Search for all related parties, not just the prospective client's name. Include opposing parties, subsidiaries, and key individuals.
  • Keep your client records up to date with accurate names and related party information — the conflict checker is only as good as your data.
  • Save or print the results for your intake file.

The Conflict Checker is available on the LawBillity subscription tier.
